Elegant and affordable

DASTKAAR ANDHRA'S landmark efforts in reviving, developing and marketing the languishing cotton textile crafts of Andhra Pradesh is one of the great interactive NGO success stories of the last century. Today, thanks to Dastkaar's product development and design inputs and marketing strategy, Pasalpudi, Chirala, East Godavari, Pondhur, Srikaikulam and Rajavolu saris are once again making waves, reflecting a fine tuning of traditional imagery and contemporary elegance, and above all showcasing the traditional Andhra weaver's unmatched skills.

Opening on October 10 at Jubilee Hall, Andhra Mahila Sabha, Durgabai Deshmukh Road, Raja Annamalai Puram, is Dastkaar Andhra's exhibition-cum-sale of the finest of Andhra Pradesh's cotton saris and yardage, from vibrant double ikkats and vegetable dyed Pondhur to Kalamkari saris, self-checked Rajavolus and much more.

Classic simplicity, elegance and affordability are the defining hallmarks of each textile exhibit at the Dastkaar exhibition. For sheer muted sophistication, the natural dyed khadi saris, dupattas and bordered yardage are woven in dobby, jamdaani or kuppadam technique with muga silk and pure zari. Equally festive are kalamkari printed handloom cotton and khadi saris in a wide range of zari and woven borders.

Also showcased at the exhibition are fine cotton ikkat saris, elegant Pasalpudis in muted, flecked weaves and self-checked Rajavolu saris from East Godavari.

Yardage, dupattas, ready-mades, coordinated salwar-kurta sets as well as attractive bed and table linen form part of the Dastkaar product range. The yardage is available in an array of colours and designs and a matching colour palette is used for all varieties. The bordered yardage is in plains, checks and stripes. The dupattas too come in an attractive range, in soft colours, with zari and cotton thread borders and in vegetable dyed khadi. The ready-mades comprise salwar kameez sets in lovely design and weaves, as well as kurtas for men and women.

Ikkat and Kalamkari bed spreads in beautiful configurations and designs make cool interior statements at Dastkaar along with bright checked ikkat tablecloths with matching napkins.

The Dastkaar Exhibition-cum-Sale is from Oct 10-13.
