Denon Pro DJ School offers a new career option for the City's youngsters.

Clement: Unscathed in the war of the DJs.
A HEAVILY tattooed, chain-smoking youth with unruly hair. Think of a disc jockey and that's the image that floats before your eyes. So, you don't know if he is for real when you meet the soft-spoken Clement, the driving force behind Bangalore's first professional DJ training institute - Denon Pro DJ School. It is, incidentally, the first school of its kind in South India.
In his characteristic gentle style, Clement explains the need for a school of this kind in Bangalore: "The City offers a lot of scope for `deejaying' as a profession. Though we may have unreasonable curbs on clubs and parties, the music never dies, and the crowd here is friendly and encouraging. When the clubs are forced to close down, inevitably, a private party happens impromptu. So, deejaying is highly competitive and confidence is the key."
But he also warns that the school does not promise a placement after the course.
Clement himself, interestingly, is a self-taught deejay and a three-time winner of the prestigious DMC Award. He is also this year's winner of the War of the DJs contest. He has set up the school along with partner Sahil Sani of the internationally-renowned Denon brand of DJ equipment. But the school, he warns you, is not simply for those with a fashion sense and those heavy on "coolness" quotient. It is a no-nonsense, strictly professional school for only those with a potential and sincerity of approach, Clement tells those who want to take up the course for its fad value.
For the first batch, they had over 500 enquiries, some from outside the City, and the screening process was long and tedious.
"We want to keep the number of students limited to be able to pay personal attention," he says.
The school, which started in late August, has a specially constructed DJ console on which students can practise. The dual CD player, CD changer, professional DJ mixer, turntables, and microphone are all in place. The course will last three months. Clement's first hand experience will, of course, be a big asset of the school. The students have the added advantage of being able to learn on the latest Denon 9000, something that is yet to be introduced in even the latest nightclubs in town. The students will also be introduced to professional deejays from Bangalore as well as other parts of the country.
The students would also be working with DJs of Bangalore's popular clubs for a feel of the crowd. With disc jockeys such as Sean from Insomnia, Bobby from Opium, and Jimmy from Proof, backing his venture, the students can hope for some credible practical experience.
