In merawala Bangalore
The gal of Asian Paints ad has shifted base to the City.
Nandini Sen: From glamour to spirituality.
REMEMBER THE Asian Paints advertisement and the doe-eyed woman who gushes: "Merawala cream?" The advertisement may be old and we may have more savvy ones replacing it now, but the news is that the model, who uttered those words, Nandini Sen, has moved base to Bangalore and simply loves the City.
"I have always liked Bangalore, every time I came here for my shows and so on... " she holds forth. Does she miss Mumbai, where she was born and brought up? "Mumbai has a special place in my heart since I have grown up there, but Bangalore is clean and open and I feel I have gained a new home."
The fact that she has friends here who go back all the way to her modelling days has also helped her settle down.
Nandini's pet project, currently, is the work she is doing for the Art of Living Foundation.
She herself is an Art of Living teacher and does quite a bit of globe-trotting to teach its various courses. The shift from the world of glamour to a spiritual one has been quite dramatic.
"In 1992, I felt this need to seek out my real purpose." This compelling urge came rushing to her in a rather theatrical way - while she was getting ready for a show in Srilanka! It was then that Nandini enrolled in various meditation courses.
But religion, refreshingly, has never meant excluding other faiths for Nandini. She explains: "I had a Christian father, a Punjabi mother, and a Muslim cook at home. So, I have chanted various prayers from an early age and felt one with all religions."
Her spiritual journey, she says, has been a beautiful one for her, having given her the ability to cherish the beauty and vision of others around her without judging them. Coming to things far from spiritual, she says another factor that promoted her to shift to Bangalore was her love of South Indian food. "That has been a big plus point!"
Also, interestingly, spiritual inclination has not meant the end of modelling career for Nandini. She promises that she is open to doing "exciting offers" in Bangalore.
