Making of a message
|
Vague words are forgettable. Clear words have punch and power. They sink in and make your comments hit home.

I SAW a note my friend Sue left for her housekeeper. It said: "Company coming please make the house sparkle!
What a lovely, clear message! What a way to enlist cooperation! And what a way to achieve your aim!
When you need to make your meaning clear, take a lesson from Sue:
Choose precise words that will help people form the mental pictures you want.
Why say `Treat the customers nicely' when you could say `Make every customer feel like a guest in your home'? Why say `Do your best' when you could say `I need it by noon on Wednesday. If it looks as if that won't be possible, please let me know by Tuesday midday'? Why say `I'll send it' when you could say `I'll fax it to you straight way'?
Vague words are forgettable. Clear words have punch and power. They sink in and make your comments hit home.
