Precocious publishers

The young publishers proudly displaying their product.

A group of school children, who are all crazy about Harry Potter, have come out with a magazine "The Monthly Prophet". The magazine is selling like hot cake, which is evident from the fact that the children have to treble their print order for the second issue.

Their goal is to increase the circulation to at least 5,000 copies and going by the current trend, it does not seem to be a distant dream. The children plan to take up charity works with the profits earned from the sale of the magazine.

The brain behind the project is Kriti Godey, a Std - VIII pupil of Timpany Secondary School. A voracious reader, Kriti has been toying with the idea of publishing a magazine for the last couple of years. She discussed her plans with her classmates and friends. While some of them rejected the idea, four of her friends readily joined hands and they successfully brought out the first issue on their own last month.

Interestingly, all the team members are obsessed with Harry Potter. Kriti and V. Sravya prefer to wear T-shirts with a picture of Harry Potter. Kriti has pasted pictures of Harry on the walls in her room and inscribed his name on her personal computer. She has her hairstyle done like that of Hermione, one of the characters in the film.

The knowledge of the team members in MS-Office came in handy for designing the pages on the computer, and Kriti has knowledge of designing web pages also. The first issue of the 10-page magazine was printed at Kriti's house. "I thought we could sell only six or seven copies but all the 35 copies were sold out within a few days and there were demands for more," says an excited Kriti.

The printing of the second issue, which was brought out recently, was entrusted to a printer. All the 100 copies have been booked. The team members sell the magazines during the lunch-hour outside their school premises and to their friends. A few copies have also been displayed at the Candy Court, Siripuram.

The other team members are - K.V.S.R. Hareen, B.S. Sasikant and K. Vivek. Vimal Ramesh, from the same class, joined them recently.

"It was their own idea. I saw the first copy only three days after it was printed. All the team members are good at their studies and the publication has brought them closer and their bond of friendship has extended outside the school also," says Sandhya Ravi, mother of Kriti.

Priced at Rs 12, the magazine covers news about the work done by Harry Potter fans, pictures from the movie, crossword, quiz and colour posters. More information can be ringing up 550708 or 533853.
