ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE: Dr. Fatimeh Mojtahedi
A GREAT `figure' or body is something most girls and women in today's world would give anything for. An hourglass figure is no longer a model's or a film star's patent. Despite Indians being different in their body structure compared to the West, the number of western clothes that have flooded the Indian market, make it imperative for an Indian aspiring to get into them to be as slim as they can. Says Dr. Fatimeh Mojtahedi, of Avicena, an alternative therapy specialist for obesity and skin problems, "my oldest patient is 65 years old. It is a good sign that most people want to be slimmer and cut down their fat. It is a known fact that obesity is the mother of all problems. The health consciousness that has set in amongst the Hyderabadis is amazing and everyone from the young to the old, puts in all effort to look good."
Dr. Fatimeh is the recent proud contender of the Guinness Book of World Records for breaking the record in terms of reduction of weight, wherein she has helped reduce 60 kgs of one of her patients, Hena from Banjara Hills, in nine months in comparison to the existing record of a Chinese doctor who helped reduce 53.5 kgs of his patient in 11 months. Hena is not the only one who has been a part of Dr. Fatimeh's miraculous touch. There are 3000 others who have lost large amounts of excess fat, in a systematic, effective and safe way, that Dr. Fatimeh stresses on.
Unscrupulous dieting without proper medical supervision could lead to a gamut of problems like acidity, dizziness and in some cases sudden loss of weight could even lead to heart problems. The only way that one can lose weight is to combine exercise with diet on a long-term basis. But there are many who complain that they have put on so much that it is impossible to lose weight even when one follows a diet-exercise pattern. Says Raunaq, husband of Dr. Fatimeh, "when one is 132 kgs, how can he/she walk or exercise? Most of them even find it difficult to move about and they are the people who really need help."
At Avicena, there is a cure for everyone. Dr. Fatimeh is the only practitioner in entire Andhra Pradesh of complementary medicine. She effectively combines her knowledge of medicine as a qualified MD from Osmania Medical college with her research in alternative medicine to produce miraculous results for her patients suffering from obesity or skin problems.
The daughter of the first Ambassador of the Islamic Revolution of Iran to India, her tryst with India began the day the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi reserved a medical seat for her telling her father that she somehow sensed that the little girl would someday prove to be one of the country's assets. Dr. Fatimeh went on to complete her `O' levels in London and then came to Hyderabad to complete her medicine in Osmania Medical College. At the end of it, she decided that she did not want to be one of the many doctors in the city and took to extensive research in alternative medicine. Her research led her to the prescriptions of Abu-ali-sina, known as Avicena (greek name), the father of medicine, according to the scriptures. These prescriptions had been passed down through the ages and with single-minded devotion, she put together all her findings to formulate her own theory of cures for obesity and skin problems. Thus her remedies are purely herb based. They are completely safe without any side effects, says Dr. Fatimeh. She adds smilingly that when she started, she had some of the elite of Hyderabad, including qualified doctors, who got her medicines tested at laboratories outside the twin cities for side effects, but came back to her for treatment after the results showed negative for the same.
Contends Raunaq, " "if today we have 3000 plus patients, in India and abroad, it is only the good work that we do that acts as publicity." He also quickly adds that, this number could have been larger if only people were willing to share the little secret of their amazing shape with others. He says that many clients do not share this information with others to ensure that they have that little edge. Her client list includes ministers, actresses, models, the elite of the twin cities and in the country, doctors among others. Yet she says that, her sense of satisfaction lies in curing the less privileged. There are umpteen number of cases of infertility and leucoderma having been cured by her and documented for the scrutiny of anyone interested. She recently surprised most medical practitioners in the twin cities by helping patients suffering from hypo-thyroid reduce. Hypo-thyroid patients usually are on hormonal therapy which makes them gain weight and curing them was her most difficult task, recounts Dr. Fatimeh. The only thing that she insists on during her course of treatment, is that the patient should disclose all his/her health related problems and habits which would be most essential for her to formulate her treatment.
Dr. Fatmeh says that she is one doctor who loses her patients, in other words never gets them back as they never find the necessity to come back to her. Her remedy ensures that, the fat is lost permanently and the patient is taught to maintain during the course of treatment. Apart from a weight loss treatment, she has also formulated a maintenance diet, which would ensure that her patients do not put on what they have lost immediately after the treatment is over, which is the case with most slimming centres, aerobic classes and naturopathy centres. Her patients are allowed to eat and drink during the course of her treatment, as one can live with restrictions only for a certain period of time. When they lose that control, they tend to go on a binge and that is what amounts to weight. Hence her programme takes into account the eating and drinking habits of a person before being enforced.
Dr. Fatimeh can be contacted at Avicena, Fibrolie House, Vicar-Ul-Umra Palace, Airport Road, Opposite Police Station, Begumpet. Phone: 7901825, 7906467, 6325695
