BOOKS, BOOKS, books... the burden of books can be bothersome and even boring for toddlers who have just entered the portals of school. In this context, the display-cum-sale of `school supply specials' by Nav Bharat Publications Co., is perhaps a unique attempt on the part of a publishing house to spread the message to educationists that learning the three Rs need not be a drag for children but fun and adventure all the way.
With decades of experience in the business of preparing and supplying textbooks and equipment of every description to schools, Nav Bharat's managing director, Ishwarlal Sharma and CEO, Rahul Sharma have discovered that it takes just a bit of imagination and innovation to make the process of imparting education more child-friendly.
Would you, for instance, have thought that you could learn more about wildlife through a colourful jigsaw puzzle? Or, read the classic tale of the Hunchback of Notre Dame to the accompaniment of sounds that have a world of meaning? Yes, jigsaw, pop-up and puppet books... these are just a few among countless creative ways to make a story come alive. So ingeniously designed is the range of educational aids, that they would instantly arouse a child's curiosity to explore, learn and internalise concepts. The display also includes toys and play equipment by Funskool and OK Play.
"Our aim is to establish a one-to-one link with schools, and help managements implement our `play and learn' activity package," says Rahul Sharma. "A kindergarten class," he suggests, "could be divided into activity corners for art, craft, reading and recreation. The children could be divided into groups and take turns to participate in each of these activities."
But what about the cost? "Nav Bharat customises its packages to cater even for rural schools with shoestring budgets or the elite ones for whom the sky is the limit," he says.
Nav Bharat, incidentally, does not focus on Montessori equipment alone, but also on books and equipment, audio visual aids and CD ROMs for all levels of school education, be it in the arts or science subjects. The endeavour to make learning meaningful also includes special children. The `learn by touch' and Braille books, which the company brings out, come in handy for children with special needs.
The CEO says plans are on to organise workshops in response to the specific requirements of schools and what's more, with a child psychologist on the panel. He also proposes to organise theme-based workshops in different parts of the city, depending on the relevance.
The response from schools and parents to the exhibition, which is on at 13/7, Ist Street, Gopalapuram, has been so overwhelming that it has been extended to August 13. For details, dial 8114560 or e-mail to navbharat@kmronline.com
