WHO CAN resist the wonderful colours, textures and abhala-encrusted magic of Gujarat's crafts? In a unique creative response to their environment, the craftspersons of the State leave a distinctive imprint on their functional decorative objects and surroundings, be it a touch of embroidery that transforms lehengas and cholis into shimmering works of art, the `lippai' work that does the same for the walls of their homes, the many-splendoured block prints and vegetable dyes, the colours of the tie and dye craft traditions, the equally bright Sankheda furniture and so on.
A lot of Gujarat's lifestyle items are being showcased at an exhibition-cum-sale that is on at Gurjari. Vegetable and chemical dyed garments, textiles and saris are the main attractions of the show.
The vibrant Bhuj block printed salwar kurta sets and yardage in earthy colours have been highlighted by Rabari, mutwa, ari and mochi embroidery. The `made-ups' include short tops and dupattas. An ethnic statement for interiors is made by a wide choice in block printed bedspreads, cushion covers, tablecloths and so on.
Another attraction at the exhibition is the Sankheda lacquer work furniture in bright colours as also the innovative jute backed string chairs, sofa sets and peedis. Embroidered wall hangings, torans and cushion covers, featuring various embroidery styles and depicting vignettes of rural life and the flora and fauna, add a touch of exuberance to the `Gurjari' exhibition.
Metal artefacts and jewellery boxes, leather-framed mirrors, embroidered handbags and jackets and jhoolas are the other typical craft offerings of the State.
There are stuffed birds with the brightest of feathers swinging vertically, as well as mobiles made of tiny brass birds and animals. There are unusual gifts like the pretty copper cow bells of Gujarat which can be strung together to form a welcome arch, bunched for focussed appeal or hung vertically.
The exhibition-cum-sale on at `Gurjari', Khader Nawaz Khan Road, Nungambakkam, ends on July 31.
