For film buffs

TWO GRIPPING films, Vittorio di Sica's "Bicycle Thieves" (Ladri di Biciclette) and Krzysztof Kieslowski's "Decalogue 1" were screened in the city recently to mark the launch of the Duchess Film Club at the Savera Hotel.

The club is the brainchild of actresses, Suhasini Mani Ratnam and Revathi Menon. Providing them the forum is the Duchess Club.

As for the films, "Bicycle Thieves" is so well entrenched as a masterpiece, that it is startling to find that even after so many years it is alive, and has the strength and the freshness to move you. Regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, it is a simple, powerful story about a man who needs a job.

Krzysztof Kieslowski's "Decalogue 1" (a series which explores the moral issues of human existence through ten contemporary tales, each based on the Ten Commandments) is about a father and son, whose foray into the world of science vis-à-vis religion is just as moving and stunning in its simplicity.

The screening of "Decalogue" and "Bicycle Thieves" was followed by an interactive session with Rajeev Menon, Parthiban and Balu Mahendra.
