Birthdays are special and celebrating the event in a different way makes it memorable too. Shop at General Bazaar for exclusive items to have unique thematic birthday parties.

CELEBRATING IDEAS: General Bazaar is the place to go to.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES are not just family affairs anymore. They reflect your taste, style, status and attitude. If you are looking for items to add that extra touch to birthday parties, head to General Bazaar, Secunderabad. From small scented erasers to large thermocol cut outs that can be mounted on the walls to musical candles, the list is endless. The items are priced to suit every pocket. For the middle class, General Bazaar is a one-stop shop solution for birthday parties. The shops in the area do wonderful business and cash in on the craze for new fashions. Says Sunil of Prakash Party Shop, the oldest in the area (it is a 40-year-old store), "We have been selling these exclusive birthday items for the last five years, but never did it go on so well as now. So, we have started organising parties too. People do not mind shelling even thousands of rupees on celebrating birthdays."

From different kinds of balloons (ordinary, helium, toy, fluorescent, round, heart, metallic), snack boxes (of different shapes and sizes), water bottles, to gift sets, lunch bags, colour ribbons and papers, from Happy Birthday banners, candles (musical and spiral), dolls, photo frames and clay moulds to birthday caps, party bags, aluminium foils, books (comics, story, colouring), cups napkins, disposable glasses and plates (with all cartoon characters on them) - name it and you have it all.

Other attractions are pen pouches and holders, kiddy banks, painting sets, bouncing balls, hanging decorations, wind-up toys, purses (hello kitty and barbie), key chains, sippers, vegetable and fruit cubes, alphabets, whistles, video games, magic slates, chocolates (of major brands), face masks, et al.

The shops are well equipped to handle any kind of demand from a customer. They have the widest range of return gifts for reasonable prices, not available elsewhere in the city. "We have all items priced between Rs. 2 and Rs.100. Of course, the list of fast-moving items changes from time to time. The kitchen sets are the favourite of young girls," says Ashok Kumar of S.L.N.S. & Co, who has been in this business since 1997.

Recently, the shops have stepped into another sphere - of organising birthday parties. "We organise parties for big corporate companies and also small private sectors. We decorate houses too depending on the customers' choice, budget and theme," says Sunil. The latest themes include Harry Potter, Barbie, etc.

Apart from providing entertainment to the guests, including magic shows, talking dolls, special and inflated, big and small cartoon characters, pony, camel, buggy rides, jugglers, men on stilt, puppet shows, fire eaters, merry-go-round, giant wheel, Canadian Clown, etc, they also conduct games like gun shooting hoopla, pyramid, fish the bottle, basket ball, hungry Sam, 9 pins and car racing for the tiny tots.

What about the eatables? "Well, we supply pop corn, cotton candy, ice gola," says Sunil. And the charges? "Anywhere between Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 10,000, which depends, of course, on the customers' choice and theme," explains Sunil.

The most popular shops in the area are Prakash Party Shop, S.L.N.S & Co., Sree Rama Stores, Gopal Stationery and Paper Mart and Vijaya Traders. These shops store general items, plastic and gift items, too.
