Variety fare in verdant environs
The bright and colourful ambience of Limelight.
WITH BRIGHT interiors and ceiling-to-floor plate glass walls, which provide you with superb views of the verdant KGA Golf Course, Limelight is an airy 72-cover multi-cuisine restaurant. The decor is Mediterranean with beige flooring, cream coloured wood, and wrought iron furniture decked with attractive tablemats. The place, surrounded by lush greenery that is visible from every table, is so soothing that one tends to just sit back to take in the ambience.
The buffet section, in one end of the dining area, has a salad bar tastefully arranged with cold cuts and veggies that enhance the all-round colourful cheer. It is also called coffee shop, as it is open all 24 hours. Breakfast, buffet lunch, and a la carte choices are available with the menu divided into starters, soups, Indian, continental, and oriental sections. Though the list is not long, it covers a wide range. One also notices that the drinking water served here is laced with a hint of mint and lime, quite an unusual touch.
For starters, prawn cocktail (with fresh prawns coated with tangy sauce and served on a bed of lettuce), would be a good choice. Asian chicken chutney salad is the other option. It has cubes of chicken marinated in sweet and spicy Indian chutney served over salad greens.
For vegetarians, the chef's special cottage cheese, cooked in clay oven, is recommended. Called Tiranga (three coloured), this dish has hues of the Indian flag green chutney, saffron sauce et al. Each tiranga morsel is a tandur lover's delight. There is also the tomato mozzarella cheese salad with balsamic vinegar.
Shrimp bisque, manchow, tomato-mint, and mulligatawny feature in the soup section, but the chef recommends the unusual sweet corn cappuccino soup, which comes with chicken or vegetables. It is the familiar corn soup that has the added dimension of being topped with frothed milk with a hint of cappuccino a delicious innovation.
The Indian delicacies include prawn Alleppey (a tangy item from Kerala coast) and Madras fish curry (spicy with sweet chillies). One could also order mahi tikka (chunks of fish, cooked in tandur, served with mint chutney and greens). Its matka chicken comes boneless in a clay pot. If adventurous, go for the chicken chettinad, a spicy dish.
Kathi rolls are served with either chicken or vegetables. Mutton saagwala (with Punjabi spinach gravy), kadai paneer (with capsicum and onion), and dum aloo biryani (cooked in yellow curry and spicy cottage cheese mix) are the other items featured on the menu. Baby corn lovers would be pleased with the jalfreizi that has mushrooms, spinach, and spices.
The international section offers fish and chips (crumb fried with French fries and tartar sauce), grilled fish steak (Kingfish served with charon sauce), and the spaghetti marinara has seafood and is tossed in herb and tomato flavoured cream sauce. The chicken items are croissant (pan-fried and folded with wine sauce) and chicken roulade, which is the breast of chicken, served with Hungarian sauce.
An unusual item pancakes, filled with spicy mushroom and spinach, glazed with curry sauce indeed is an offbeat adventure. Another unusual item is the calzoni, a pizza that is folded over into a sort of pocket, and is filled with onions, peppers, olives, gherkins, and sunny tomatoes. Such a "pizza pocket" is also available at the regular pizza outlets in the City, but at Limelight, the dish is not fried but baked... Definitely a not-to-be-missed delicacy that proves that a new dimension can be added to the mundane pizza.
Thai and Chinese dishes include Thai prawns in yellow curry, Thai chicken in red curry, and Nasi Goreng, a spicy seafood rice preparation topped with fried egg, chicken satay, and prawn crackers. The oriental dishes come with steamed or fried rice. The Thai vegetarian curry, with broccoli, mushroom, carrots, baby aubergine, cooked in traditional green curry and served in a circle of steamed rice, makes a sumptuous treat.
Since Limelight also doubles up as a coffee shop, it offers a wide range of short eats. Limelight burger is minced chicken steak grilled and served on bun with lettuce, gherkins, onions, cheese, tomatoes, and French fries. The chef recommends the twin vegetable burger, a double delight, with cheese on one side and patti on the other, served with fries and cole slaw. Limelight offers 12 buffet items, seven varieties of salad and dessert that vary on a daily basis.
For dinner on weekdays and on Sundays at noon, it offers live music, where the group, Versatiles, regale you with live music from 9 p.m. to midnight (except on Mondays).
An average meal for two costs Rs. 500 and advance reservation is recommended during dinners and weekends.
