Vijayanirmala enters the Guinness

THESE SOUTHERN women sure deserve the term Steel Samanthipoos (as contrasted with Magnolias). Close on actress Manorama's heels, actress-director Vijayanirmala is now entering the Guinness Book of World Records 2000 for being the only woman director to have directed 42 films, the most for any woman director in the world. From her first directorial venture Meena (1971), Vijayanirmala has made films in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. A veteran who entered films, as a child artiste in Panduranga Mahatmiyam at the age of 11, she became a heroine with the Telugu film Rangula Raatnam. Nostalgic fans will remember her debut film in Tamil as Engaveettu Penn. The Tamil-Telugu Academy in Chennai is felicitating her on her achievement on May 1. A glittering array of celebrities are expected to be part of this show, including Dasari Narayana Rao, Krishna, Manorama, Nagesh, SPB, Radhika Sarathkumar, Naresh, Roja, Kutty Padmini and others.
