Say cheese!

The Cheese Festival at Q Mart promises to be a delightful excursion into the world of exotic cheeses.

A host of cheeses to choose from.

CHEESE IS one of those foods that triggers a host of emotional responses. Like coffee, there are people who savour it and for whom selecting the right cheese to go with a particular dish or wine is akin to a religious ritual while there are others who are put off by the very mention of the `C' word.

Everyone who moans about the lack of good cheese in Hyderabad can cheer up and indulge in the cheese festival at Q-Mart, Road No. 2, Banjara Hills (Phone: 6634758/59) over the weekend (April 20-21).

At the festival, apart from a free recipe booklet and a chance to sample various varieties of cheese with crackers, you will also be able to see live demos of the creation of lasagne, tiramisu and other delicacies made with cheese.

"We introduced imported natural cheese in November for our foreign clientele and it was very popular with the Indian shoppers as well," says BVK Raju of Q Mart. Raju and Hanumanth Rao, partners at Q Mart, studied together in the US and picked up taste of exotic cheese on their travels in Europe. "The Indian cheese market is growing at a phenomenal 40 per cent and the cheese singles are fast-moving." "We wanted people to know more about cheese in terms of varieties and usage. We observed that people walked into the store and were interested in the cheese but wanted to know how to use it," adds Rao.

Apart from the popular Carosella from Kodaikanal and cheese from the Pune-based ABC farms, the cheese festival will feature about 20 types of imported cheese. Some of the exotic cheese at the fest include the Swiss Emmental with the characteristic holes, the French Camembert and Gorgonzola-the traditional blue Italian cheese.There are various types of cheese for different preparations. For instance Emmental cheese goes well with quiches, sandwiches or as cubes in salads, while the Dutch cheese Gouda doubles up as a table and dessert cheese. Cheese makes a good combination with liquor. A stronger cheese is usually taken with a milder wine. "Cheese is a niche market and cheese differ according to the cultures used. ," explains Raju.
