Of lasting impact

When young blood wants quick-fix results, here is a young flautist whose recital shows the mark of sadhana, says M.K BALAGOPAL who reviews his recent concert in the city

Dedication is one thing conspicuous by its absence among youngsters who plunge into the musical track just lured by its glamour potential on the silver screen and the mini screen. They are obviously in a hurry and the concepts of sadhana and upasana are alien to them. Naturally, their craze is for ganamelas in which the difference in meaning between noise and voice nosedives to the zero level at supersonic speed.

Genuine music lovers are saddened by this unhealthy trend. In this polluted atmosphere, the emergence of a young musician dedicated to the traditional values of music cheers them like showers in a drought hit area and they heave a sigh of relief

It was this feeling that Parameswaran Muzhikulam on the staff of Sri Sankara University, Kaladi generated with his flute recital at the Carissima Art Centre on I.S Press Road, Ernakulam. A disciple of veteran flautist Vytilla Paramu Das, he caught the attention of music lovers with two things He made full use of the unique potential of flute as a wind instrument in bringing out the subtle ranges of raga bhava in alapana and swaraprasthara . He also tried to give full justice to every piece he rendered keeping in mind the fact that raga is the soul of Indian music whether Hindustani or Carnatic . He was never in a hurry. He took ample time to unfold the true character of every raga even in Krithis not chosen for elaborate delineation of ragas .There were virtually no fillers.

The accompanying artistes too rose to the occasion . Violin support was provided by Bijoy Eramallur, nephew and disciple of Nedumangad Sivanandan who is the guru of Thiruvizha Sivanandan . Mridangist Balakrishna Kamath, a disciple of N.P Ramaswamy , provided the percussionist support .

Carissima came into being as a cultural forum only in January this year . This is the third programme conducted by the centre. But this is for the first time that it has organised a classical music concert. The small but receptive audience provided the right ambience for the concert.

The concert began with the popular piece Vathapi in Hamsadhwani. But it was much more than a warming up exercise as is the case in many concerts. The rendering was marked by elaborate raga alapana and detailed swaraprasthara . The main Krithi rendered at the concert was Nagumomu in Abheri. While rendering both the Krithis, the flautist as well as the violinist paid proper attention to alapana, niraval and swaraprasthara . Even the bits were rendered with emphasis on raga bhava. After a krithi in Saraswathi composed by G.N.B , Parameswaran enlivened the audience by exploiting the full potential of Raghuvamsa Sutha in Kadanakuduhalam, a crowd-puller par excellence. This was followed by two pieces with a devotional touch--Bhaja Bhaja Manasa in Sindhu Bhairavi and a Lakshmi sthrothra in Madhyamavati. The concert was over in less than two hours though the audience was in a mood to stay on for a while . The point to note is that Mr. Parameswaran has managed to make a lasting impact on the listeners.
