WHEN do dolls cease to be mere playthings and pretty exhibits and assume a far more profound role? When they are crafted by Belgian doll maker Francoise Bosteels, who came to India more than 25 years ago and stayed on. Bosteel's models are created to depict human toil and bondage: her medium may be a traditional plaything but the message is intensely serious. Through her dolls Bosteels aims to guide viewers toward a deeper awareness and sensitivity of the "other" India. Now Kolkatans can get a chance to see these creations at an exhibition being held at the Academy of Fine Arts from August 7-10.

HE'S in his 88th year and going strong. And characteristically M.F. Husain is celebrating his entry into this double-figured year in fida style with a four-city exhibition showcasing 88 of his works that kicked off, where else, but at Gallerie 88 in Kolkata on August 2. The reason for the 88 exhibition, the artist claims, is no gimmick designed for this theme-hungry age: it is because the numerology inherent in the figure 88 fascinates him! Well, as they say it's all in the numbers and Kolkatans can decide for themselves between August 2-30 at Gallerie 88.
