VISITORS to the city who seek the flavour of Karnataka are in for a musical treat today. Bhagavatharu, a cultural organisation, has organised a daylong music programme directed by popular singer C. Ashwath. No less than 40 singers will take the stage, including Rathnamala Prakash, Shimoga Subbanna, Yuvraj, Malathi Sharma and Shankar Shanbhag, accompanied by 35 instrumentalists. The music will include everything from vachanas and dasara padas to songs from film, theatre, and popular Kannada serials. The finale will be a treat by Ashwath himself, who will sing 10 songs by poets such as Gopalakrishna Adiga, D.R. Bendre and Nissar Ahmed. At Ravindra Kalakshetra, J.C. Road, on June 8 from 10 a.m. onwards.

A MEDICAL and health exhibition with a strong educational component has been organised by Suraj Creations and B2BC. Hosted by the local M.S. Ramaiah Medical College and Hospitals, its main feature is a "museum" with segments on medical and health sciences, instrumentation, preventive medicine, and so on. Other highlights are innovations in medicine, exhibits that satisfy requirements "from womb to tomb", eye and blood donation camps, and an Aids awareness programme. At Bangalore Palace Grounds, till June 15 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

BANGALORE School of Music presents "Roots: Saxophone and Piano Concert", a recital by German saxophonist Uwe Steinmetz and pianist Pauline Warjri from Shillong, Meghalaya. Steinmetz is a recipient of many prizes and grants and has won the best soloist award in the European Jazz Competition in 2001 in Spain. Warjri is an accompanist, songwriter and composer who works with choirs, vocal and ensembles. Together the artists have released a CD called "Roots", consisting of original compositions, arrangements of Khasi folk songs and German hymns in the jazz, folk and classical styles. The artists currently teach at the Kodaikanal International School in Tamil Nadu. Donor cards Rs.100 and Rs. 50 at Cafi de Paris (AFB) and Supermarket (Brigade Road). At the Auditorium, Alliance Francaise, on June 14 at 7 p.m.

DID you know that a Greek engineer invented the organ in 270 BC? Take "A Guided Tour into the World of the Classical Organ" with Arnaud Devic, a French resident of Pune. The lecture-presentation is organised by International Music and Arts Society and Alliance Francaise. Devic's presentation, packed with musical examples and illustrations, will explain the history of the organ, the main organ builders, and the magnificent contribution of Johann Sebastian Bach to organ music. At the Auditorium, Alliance Francaise, on June 11 at 6.30 p.m. The presentation will last 1 hour 45 minutes with a 15-minute tea break. Entry passes at the AFB office at Rs. 75 for IMAS and AFB members, and Rs. 50 for those with student IDs.
