TAKING the village-fair concept to the city is the Artists Action Group, which will organise Bhoomi Jathre 2003 this weekend. The completely non-sponsored festival will be funded purely through the gate collection, which the performers have volunteered to share. Gather at an eco-ashram on the outskirts of the City, buy momos, brownies, akki roti, organic veggies, mats, pottery, chappals, listen to and watch an exciting mix of the traditional and the modern. Dollu kunita from Janapada Loka, Stree Taal Tarang (talavadyam), Debiprasad Ghosh (sarod) and Vishwanath Nakhod (tabla), Madrigals Etc (choir), bhoomi geethe (earth songs) from Bhima Sangha, Tripura Kashyap (contemporary dance), Kali (rock), Shanti Rao (veena), Thermal and A Quarter (blues-rock), and Konarak Reddy (guitar). THERE'S going to be a deluge of scientific and cultural events over the next three months in all the major Indian cities during the "French Season in India A Rendezvous With France" which aims to bring better visibility to India in France and France in India. Alliance Française de Bangalore and the International Music and Arts Society present a poetry reading of "New and Recent Poems" by Saleem Peeradina, the well-known poet, critic and teacher of creative writing. His publications include three books of poetry, and his forthcoming prose memoir is titled The Ocean in my Yard. At the Alliance Française Auditorium, February 10 at 6.30 p.m.

YOU'VE probably read them, but have you seen what they look like? Alliance Française de Bangalore and the Embassy of France in India present "Faces of Indian Literature", an exhibition of 40 black and white photographs of eminent Indian writers, by French photographer Olivier Gazal. Gazal has worked for the French daily Le Monde and has been covering Asia for the past few years. The exhibition includes portraits of writers like U.R. Ananthamurthy, Amit Chaudhuri, Indira Goswami, Kamala Das, Shashi Deshpande, Upamanyu Chatterjee, Amitav Ghosh, Bisham Sahni and Khushwant Singh. At the Atrium, Alliance Française, from February 14-25, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
