The Alva duo

EIGHT years ago, Niret and Nikhil Alva put together a film on a young girl in Madri district in Rajasthan. They chose Santosh, the young subject of their film, captivated by her innocent looks and air of vivacity. Many years later, the Alva brothers went back to the village and traced Santosh. What they saw left them disturbed and shaken. Their later film "Santosh Revisited" is a stark portrayal of a childhood betrayed by a society stuck to its age-old ideas and notions. Seventeen now, Santosh has nothing more left to look forward to. She is a mother of two. Said Niret, "As journalists we tend to take ourselves too seriously. We were optimistic about the quality of Santosh's life but reality was a different story... a shock."
