Francis Newton Souza passed away in Mumbai on March 28, Maundy Thursday, a day that prefigures the Crucifixion, which he identified in his art, which in turn reflected his own tortured self. The progressive and cosmopolitan air of the city, his membe rship in the 1950s of the Communist Party and his own non-conformist soul guided the Progressive Artists Movement which he founded together with S.H. Raza, M.F. Husain, Tyeb Mehta and K.H. Ara. Goa gave him the colour and form of his best work. It i s in keeping with his destiny that he should have returned to touch the spirit that possessed him on his brief visit there a few months ago, says MARIA AURORA COUTO, in the conclusion of a two-part article.
