India end World Youth Athletics campaign sans medal

New Delhi (PTI): India completed its campaign in the World Youth Athletics Championships without a medal after Ankit Sharma came fifth in the boys long jump event at Bressanone, Italy on Friday.

Ankit's national record of 7.59m, which he set last month in the Indian Grand Prix (senior event) in Ranchi, was the second best of 2009 among youth in the world before this Championships. But when it really mattered, Ankit could only clear 7.47m -- in his third attempt -- to finish fifth.

Thailand's SNA Supanara won the gold with an effort of 7.65m while Stefan Brits (7.57m) of South Africa and Yannick Roggatz (7.53m) of Germany won the silver and bronze respectively.

Ankit was not at his best as he had two foul jumps and his three other efforts were below seven metres. His last two efforts were though against heavy wind.

Ankit's four other compatriots were eliminated in the qualification round which brought an end to the Indian campaign in the Championships without any medal.

National record holder Gaddam Mounika failed to qualify for the semifinal round in girls 200m. She clocked 25.45secs, below her national record of 24.88secs, to finish a disappointing fifth in the heat number six.

In boys 200m also, Amiya Kumar Mallick failed to qualify for the semifinals after finishing third in heat number three with a timing of 22.25secs.

A below-par Gurwant Singh finished a disappointing 15th in the qualification round Group A of the boys shot put. He could only clear 17.09m, well below his personal best of 18.20.

Arpinder Singh finished 12th in the triple jump qualification round Group B competition with a 14.20m effort.

In the last World Championships at Ostrava in Czech Republic in 2007, India were represented by 12 athletes and returned without a medal.

This time, India were represented by 10 athletes.
