Uproar in Rajasthan assembly over drinking water issue

Jaipur (PTI): Raising the issue of acute water shortage in Kolayat, BJP MLA Devi Singh Bhati on Friday sat on dharna in the well of the Rajasthan Assembly demanding alternate water supply.

Accusing Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot of ignoring a possible drought like situation, Bhati said that Gehlot has not made any provisions for drought management in the budget 2009-10 presented on Wednesday.

"At a time, when the State is likely to face serious problem of drought following no rains during monsoon, the Chief Minister did not make any provision of drought management to face the situation."

Demanding alternative arrangements of water supply in the area through tankers or other methods, Bhati declared to go on 'Amran Anshan' or 'fast unto death' till the government does not make any announcement on water supply for Kolayat area in Bikaner.

The protestors went back to their seats 15 minutes later, when Speaker, Deependra Singh, asked the State Water Resources Minister Mahipal Maderna for a statement on the issue.

Mr. Maderna said that the government was serious about the drinking water problem throughout the State adding that the situation will be more alarming, owing to inadequate rains during monsoons.

He also added that a detailed statement on the behalf of the State government will be presented in the house on Monday.
