Measles vaccines are of good quality: Anbumani Ramadoss
Chennai (PTI): Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss on Saturday said the measles vaccine administered to children in Tamil Nadu were of good quality.
He told a press meet here that the tests on the samples collected had proved that there was "no fault" with the vaccine.
However, the probe by the team led by the Drugs Controller General of India was yet to be completed to know the cause of the deaths, he said.
Five children had died after they were administered measles vaccine in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu last month. Following this, the Centre suspended use of measles vaccine produced by a company at Hyderabad and ordered a high level probe.
The suspension on the use of vaccine would be lifted only after the probe was completed, he said.
He said the vaccine supplied to Tamil Nadu was cleared by UNICEF, which adopted stringent procedures for clearing the drugs and hence there could not be any fault with the vaccine.
On the Tamil Nadu government's decision to suspend the use of 'auto disable syringes' as some of the syringes were found to be rusted, he said his ministry had ordered a probe into the issue.
The Centre had decided to introduce auto disable syringes only after studies revealed that even disposable syringes were re-used in many parts of the country, he said.
