Siliguri (PTI): The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), which has been demanding a separate state, on Friday said the West Bengal government should introduce a 'Gorkhaland bill' in the assembly and recommend it to Parliament for consideration even as Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee asserted there would be no division of the state.

"We have written to the chief minister on Friday to introduce a 'Gorkhaland bill' in the West Bengal assembly and recommend it to Parliament for consideration," GJM general secretary Roshan Giri told PTI. "Since the chief minister had said he has not received any demand from the GJM, we have written to him placing our demand for Gorkhaland, which would also include Siliguri, Terai and the Dooars," Giri said.

Confirming the receipt of the letter, Bhattacharjee said: "There is no question of division of West Bengal." "I have received a letter from them (GJM) today. I am not taking a decision right now. Let me talk to my colleagues first," Bhattacharjee told reporters in Kolkata. The GJM, on the other hand, said it was open to talks and would not indulge in violence.

"In the seven months since the GJM was formed, it has never resorted to violence," Giri claimed. GJM president Bimal Gurung had told a massive rally here on May 7 that it would achieve Gorkhaland by 2010 following Mahatma Gandhi's path of non-violence.
