Sensuously sparkling recital

A. RAMALINGA SASTRY

Syamasundaram and Jayalakshmi’s veena recital was adorned with tanam and neravu.

Kalabharati witnessed a sedate but sensuously sparkling veena recital by Ayyagari Syamasundaram (son of Veena exponent Ayyagari Someswara Rao) and his wife Jayalakshmi last Thursday.

Exquisitely accompanied on mridangam by Vankayala Venkataramana Murty and G. Venkata Rao on ghatam, it was rendered for Visakha Music Academy.

Getting off to a tuneful start with the Sri Varalakshmi (Sri raga) of Dikshitar, the duo sharing the expression of the manodharma (ragam and swaram)in equal measure, exquisitely elaborated Samajavaragamana (Hindolam), Yenduku Srirama (Saaranga), Bhajare Re Maanasa (Carnataka Devagandhari) and Gnanamosagarada (Poorvikalyani) before going in for an expansive expatiation of Pankajalochana (Kalyani) adorned with tanam and neravu as well.

Winner for the best veena performance award of the Madras Music Academy and Srikrishna Gaanasabha of Chennai besides being a choice for the conferment of titles ‘Veena Vaadya Vidya Visarada’, ‘Sunaada Sudhanidhi’ and the like by prestigious sabhas in the country and Mahati Kalaanidhi by the Ajo Vibho Kandalam Foundation, U.S.A., Syamasundaram no wonder was the cynosure in Kalabharathi.

Rendering of a tarangam Devadideva (Sindhubhairavi), Vandanamu Raghunandana (Sahana), Kshetrayya padham in Saveri and finally a composition of Ramadass in Naadanamakriya marked the concluding session.
