It is not strange to find foreigners at classical music and dance concerts at Sabhas, particularly during the December season.
However a group of men and women attracted attention at The Music Academy during the dance festival.
A chat revealed that they were all from Germany and readers of Germany’s leading weekly Die Zeit.
Bernd Loppow, who heads the Travel section of the weekly says, “We all have come to India just not as tourists but to understand India, particularly the South. We have plans to visit Thanjavur and other temple towns in that district.
Mrs.Vonks Fuchs Gerlende sipping hot coffee at the canteen after Kerela Kala Mandalam presented its Rukmangadha Chartitham said, “This is the first time I have seen a Kathakali performance and am thrilled.”
Dr. Puttkamar, who was earlier teaching laser physics at IIT Madras, and is a part of the group, said that he was fascinated by the Kathakali performance. We will also be going to the Dhananjayans for a demo. Our tour will not be complete without a visit to Kalakshetra. Later we will be moving to Thanajvur to meet Maharaja Serfoji to discuss culture and related subjects.”
The group, so enthralled watching the dance performances over the week, said in a chorus, “We will keep coming again and again to Chennai.”
