Soulful recital

It was a pleasant surprise listening to a music recital with a tambura being used on stage. At a time when it has almost become a forgotten affair, noted vocalist Pantula Rama rendering a recital in the expert company of her husband Mutnuri Srinivasa Narasimha Murty on violin and compatibly on mridangam by Mangalagiri Sridhar, made it look elated playing the tambura herself keeping it on her lap. She rendered the recital at Sri Sadgurubrahma Ramadoota Mandiram in Madhuranagar last Tuesday for Sangeetha Kalaa Samithi. It was sponsored by noted vocalist Mandapaka Sarada and her sister-mridanga vidwanmani Nagamani in memory of their father Mandapaka V.J. Krishnamurty, whose first love was music.

Getting off to a tunefully brisk start with the Abhogi varnam followed by Vaatapiganapathim (Hamsadhwani) adorned with brief but beautifully structured aalapana and swaram in the two tempos, she eruditely elaborated Durmarga Charaathamulanu of Tyagaraja (Ranjani).

Both Murty and Sridhar surfacing not only a harmonious blend with the intoning of the vocalist in their following but also with eruditely conformable expression in their turns, aalapana, neravu and swaram on violin and thani on mridangam helped enhancing the splendour with gusto.
