Brilliant team work In presenting ‘The Man in the Iron Mask,’ Kalakshetra, Chennai, broke tradition in more ways than one. Mix of dance, music and drama Padma gave each padam of Annamacharya a visual dimension. Familiar facts well presented Gitanjali Lal, Vempati Ravi and Venkatachalapathi showed how musical refrains and ragas lend themselves to depict different moods and situations. Levity made a difference Navia Natarajan scored with neat adavus. Ramya Rajeshkumar was immersed in her dance show. Epitome of simplicity It had no props of any type whatsoever and the dance visualisation never aimed at cleverness or ornamentation. Abhinaya comes to the fore If young Janaki Ganesh and Sukanya Kaur impressed with their talent, Aruna Mohanty sustained audience interest with her experience. Colour and creativity There was richness all around — in the music, in the orchestration and in the abhinaya, besides the richness in Shobana’s costumes.
Dancing fingers, colourful costumeBright yellow… lime green… off-white… the dress matters as much as the dance. On those indispensable craftsmen, who make the art come alive.
