Remarkable: Nirupama Rajendra and Rajendra.

The Kathak programme by Nirupama and husband Rajendra, at the eleventh annual Perur Natyanjali organised by the Rotary Club of Coimbatore metropolis at Patteeswarar temple was outstanding. Right from the choice of the prayer song, (Vedamanthras), e very item was an evidence of total commitment and sincerity.

Their ‘Rasleela’ was a sheer joy for the eyes. They also presented ‘Ta-Dha’ an item based on nritta and abhinaya and ‘Kadham, Kadham’ with total focus on footwork.

Myriad expressions

Dressed in bright but pleasing costumes (that were changed at lightning speed) the dancers twirled and swayed and poured out myriad expressions on the stage which had taken a celestial appearance with colourful lights and other accessories. Here again, the introduction by Nirupama was remarkable.

The traditionalists might have wondered whether it was pure Kathak, but the common viewers were glued to their seats and felt transported into another realm.

J. Suryanarayana Murthy, (student of Kalakshetra and disciple of the Dhananjayans), presented the cosmic dance of Siva (Sivathandavam).

His manly, yet graceful movements, admirable agility and emotion-filled abhinayas were truly impressive. His choice of the songs, ‘Idadhu Padam Thookki,’ ‘Nagendra Haaraaya’ and ‘Bho Shambho,’ though very suitable, could not impress much as they have become hackneyed.

Aradhana Dance School, Coimbatore, presented a pleasing show on Siva with a novel item based on the surmise that all living beings would have emanated from the sound of Siva’s ‘damaroo’ and the various movements of the divine couple’s dance.

This item, choreographed by guru Meenakshi Sagar, was different and enjoyable.

Mr. Gurumurthy, Chairman, Natyanjali was praised for his efficiency in coordinating and organising the event.

The steadily increasing crowd year after year, is proof of its growing popularity.
