Tamil saga in Kochi

VIJAY GEORGE

Director Siddique’s Tamil film ‘Sadhu Mirandaa,’ has Kavya Madhavan donning the role of a television anchor.

All in the game: Kavya Madhavan wields the willow on the sets of Siddique’s Tamil film ‘Sadhu Mirandaa.’

Kavya is still not sure if it was the uneven bounce of the tennis ball or the grass in the pitch that got her out for a duck! In the second take, she some how manages to do better with the bat and her team.

At the shoot of director Siddique’s Tamil film ‘Sadhu Mirandaa,’ with Prasanna and Kavya Madhavan in the lead, a scene is being canned that shows the stars testing their skills with the willow. A song is being played in the background.

The location is the common lawn of a group of independent villas in Kochi.

“I always knew that cricket was not for me but never thought it would be so bad,” sighs Kavya, sporting a trendy new hairstyle for the film.

Tamil debut

Quiz her why she has taken some time before opting for a Tamil film unlike most other actors from Mollywood and she says: “I never had problems acting in other languages. It was just that I was busy in Malayalam. For me, the greatest attraction about this film is its director. I always wanted to work with him and this film has a nice script.”

Siddique is busy discussing the next shot with choreographer Sujatha. The camera will pan wide and the crew goes into top gear once they get the directions.

It has been quite a while since he directed a Malayalam film and Siddique, who has to his credit a number of hits such as ‘Ramji Rao Speaking,’ ‘Godfather,’ ‘Hitler’ and ‘Chronic Bachelor,’ will soon be doing a project with Dileep as the hero. Meanwhile, he had directed a Telugu film, ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ in between.

“Of course, I want to do Malayalam films but the main concern these days are pirated discs that play spoilsport,” says the director.

The title ‘Sadhu Mirandaa’ has been taken from a popular Tamil proverb that means “if a gentle looking cat is provoked and becomes a tiger, even the big forest cannot contain it.”

Siddique throws more light on the storyline: “The story is based on Sivasundaram (Prasanna), a middle class youth who has no goals in his life, and Priya (Kavya), a television anchor. She comes from a rich background but learns about the financial mess that her family is in only after her father’s death. During a ‘live’ TV show, she gets a call from Sivasundaram asking the anchor to pass ona message to his friend Moorthy. Priya gets to know Sivasundaram and learns that he has a step-brother Ram Mohan (Abbas) who is in the United States. As she has always wanted to work in the U.S. she convinces Ram Mohan to arrange a passage for her to the U.S.. But there is a catch, she has to convince Sivasundaram to come along with her. There is also a hint of a mystery, like the relation between Moorthy and Sivasundaram for instance.”

Prasanna, who is running a temperature, looks a bit pale but has to perform some intricate steps for the next shot. Once the camera is on, he flashes a smile and does it all perfectly.

“I have always been a fan of Malayalam films as they deal with realistic stories,” says the hero, who has acted with Malayali heroines like Navya Nair in ‘Azhagiya Theeye’ and Meera Jasmine in ‘Kasthuriman’ earlier. ‘Sadhu Mirandaa’ is being produced under the banner of Alka Film Corporation. The music director is Deepak Dev. The film will hit the theatres towards the end of November this year.
