The global art

Manisha Gawade's works show her diverse training.

What do you expect from the canvas of an artist who explores a new country almost every month for a passion called art? A lot of variation? Experimentations? A lot of innovation? But, Manisha Gawade, a young artist, who shuttles between India, Middle East and Europe throughout the year, maintains a spectacular balance in her creations.

Manisha, who mainly works in acrylic on canvas, has mounted her first solo show at Lalit Kala Akademi. The show titled Parallel Realities which is curated by Alka Raghuvanshi is all about Manisha's parallel experiences across the globe. These 20 works hence, have various `fused' media. For instance, in a few of her works, she has fused glass and semi-precious stones with acrylic, while others have mosaic-like pattern. And her abstracts are bold statements imbibing some Scottish folk art form and some Indian ethos.

Non-conformist

Manisha is known for not conforming to the established norms of art nor has she ever believed in a formal art college training. Instead, she preferred to train under established artists from different countries, working in different media. With famous blow glass artist John Phillips in the Paris, she learnt mosaic and glass painting. "I didn't find any developed courses either in India or Dubai," she reasons. She learnt Scottish folk art forms from two established artists in U.A.E, Lisa and Sonal, respectively.

"In art colleges, teachers don't pay personal attention to the students while learning it under an artist as a guru helps understand the medium better." The show that is on till this coming Saturday.
