Jewellery for the season

EXLCUSIVE AND METICULOUSLY HANDCRAFTED: Sankaranthi Jewellery exhibition.

`The Sankranti Jewellery Collection,' especially handcrafted for Pongal, has a melange of pieces — traditional, almost forgotten ones re-produced to perfection and those designed to fit the uncluttered, elegant look of today. The ebony and sandalwood jewellery are inlaid with rubies, diamonds, emeralds and gold leaf.

The Jugal Kishore brothers, Ashok and Vijay, have searched through old family collections, odd antique pieces, fading photographs and sketches for ideas. They have reproduced and designed an entire collection replicating South India's traditional jewellery patterns.

Superb range

Each piece on view combines history, tradition, aesthetics and inventiveness. For the bride, the range is superb.

From large-sized rectangular emeralds set in a choker reminiscent of the Nizam's collection, a fantastic naquash work `hansli' sporting huge drop emeralds to traditional ruby and diamond `mangamalais' and `addigais,' stunning diamond neckpieces and so on. A few antique pieces are also on view.

Each exhibit is exclusive and meticulously handcrafted by craftsmen from Chettinad. In fact one can watch them at work at the venue. There are also a few North India style `jadau' or minakari pieces made in Jaipur.

The exhibition will be on till the month-end at `Jugal Kishore' Alsa Mall, Montieth Road, Egmore and 44/73 C.P. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet.
