Their purpose is to create a stage for young, up-and-coming Kathakali artistes.
Sandarsan Kathakali Vidyalaya, Ambalapuzha, which is trying to promote Kathakali, presented `Kalyana Sowgandikam Kathakali' at Vylloppilli Samskriti Bhavan in Thiruvanthapuram. The performance saw artistes like Kalmandalam Rathesan, Kalamandalam Mukundan and Kalamandalam Sucheedranath donning the roles of Hanuman, Bheema and Panjali respectively.
According to P. Venugopal, the brain behind this five-year-old institution, the need for new blood is the reason for the Kathakali Vidyalaya.
"There are youngsters performing Kathakali, however, they lack the stage to perform. We try to create that," says Venugopal.
The Vidyalaya conducts `Cholliyattams' (training) for students on weekly basis and organises performances to polish their skills.
Good impression
`Kalyana Sowgadhikam,' is a popular piece among Kottayathu Thamburans' attakathas. It is also a good piece for young artistes to showcase their talent.
The Pathinjapadam, in the first scene (`Panajalaraja thanaye'), provides the budding actor a chance to create a rapport with the audience through a structurally choreographed scene.
Kalamandalam Mukundan, who played Bhima, performed well. He gracefully handled the transformation of moods from sthayi to sringara and then to veera.
Kalamandalam Sucheedranath enacted the role of Panjali with panache.
His performance in the padam, `En kanava kandalum' in which Draupadi asks Bheema to bring her a `sowgandhika flower,' displayed his acting calibre.
Kalamandalam Ratheesan, son of renowned artiste, Oyur Kochu Govindan, also did a good job as Hanuman. Ratheeshan, who usually dons the Pachavesham, maintained the tempo and rhythm.
Music was by Mohana Krishnan, son of the late Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Poduval.
Nedumbali Rammohan, a young promising singer, enthralled the audience with his melodious voice.
Srikanth Varma and Margi Mohanan played the chenda and the madalam respectively.
