The temple gopurams that need immediate attention...

SRI VEDHANARAYANAR Rajagopalaswami Kulasekara Azhwar temple is situated at Mannarkovil, two kilometres from Ambasamudram in Tirunelveli district. Built during the 10th Century A.D., Lord Vishnu is said to have appeared in three postures — standing, sitting and sayana — to give darshan to his devotees.

Lord Vishnu is seen in a standing posture along with Sridevi and Bhoodevi at the base of the gopuram. In the first tier, the Lord is in a sitting position.

Around the Lord, there is a praharam called Yanai Mudukku (elephant pass).

The deity is in a sayana position in the second tier. Around this, there is a narrow praharam called Poonai Mudukku (cat pass).

This kind of three-fold gopuram is rare, situated only in this temple and also at the Srivilliputtur Raja Mannar temple, spread over several acres of land surrounded by lush-green garden and fort-like compound walls.

The Rajagopalaswami temple in general and the gopuram in particular are in a badly damaged state, and require immediate attention for renovation.

Contributions are invited for the same which may be sent to the temple at Mannarkovil, Pin - 627 413.
