Variety fare for Pongal
"Engal Anna" ... family-oriented theme.
FIVE FILMS are slated for release on Pongal day "Virumaandi", "Engal Anna", "Jai", "Pudhukkotailirunthu Saravanan" and "Kovil".
But one of these may hit the theatres a little early. The much talked about film, Kamal Hassan's "Virumaandi," with about 54 characters in the story, has some big news as far as the film is concerned.
"Jai" promises action, sentiment and love.
After much controversy, the film, which was titled "Sandiyar" earlier, has been finally certified, and Kamal Haasan is planning to screen it at the National Film Festival this year.
The story revolves around the hero, called Virumandi and the story is based on capital punishment. Nallamma Nayakar (Napolean), who stays in the next village was once a friend of Virumandi. But Koththaala Thevar (Pasupathi), the villain, tries his best to kill the hero.
When he fails in his attempt, he tries to usurp his land. In this too, he fails miserably. But he manages to make the authorities believe that Virumaandi has murdered his lover Annalakshmi (Abirami). And Virumaandi is put behind bars. Does Virumaandi succeed in getting justice and freedom? Writer-Director Kamal Haasan tells this in an interesting way. Also starring Nasser, Rohini, Kanthimathi, Pyramid Natrajan, V. K. T. Balan, Thennavan, Balasingh, O. A. K. Sunder and S. N. Lakshmi, camera has been handled by Kesava Prasad. Music is by Ilaiyaraja, choreography by Raghuram and Kamal Haasan, art by M. Prabhakar, lyrics by Muthulingam, Ilaiyaraja and Kamal Haasan, and editing by Sudersan. D. N. Subramaniam is the executive producer of Rajkamal Films International's "Virumaandi". S. Chandrahaasan and Kamal Haasan are the producers.
Andal Azhagar films' "Engal Anna" is a family-oriented subject. Vijayakanth, acting in the main role (Prabhakar), has also produced the film. The character dislikes women but the heroine Namitha loves him. But Vijayakanth does not reciprocate. His fans will be happy with the fight scenes. Prabhu Deva, Pandiyarajan and Vadivel have made the film lively with their comedy. Ananda Kuttan is the cameraman and dialogue is by Gokula Krishna. Editing is by T. R. Sekar and Gowri Shanker. Suchitra Mani takes care of the art department and Rakki Rajesh has composed the stunts. Siddik has written the story, screenplay and also directed the film.
"Virumaandi" ... a formidable star cast.
Action, sentiment, love all these, with emphasis on entertainment is "Jai". Prasanth plays the hero, Anshu Ambani, a new face from London plays opposite him. The hero struggles to get back people's wealth from the villain, who has usurped it from them. How he does it, is the crux of the story, weaved into an interesting screenplay. Simran appears in the film for a dance number and Thyagarajan plays the role of Prasanth's father. The fights have been taken care of by experts from Netherlands, Nigeria, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Two songs have been shot in Sri Lanka, and one at Dubai, Nairobi and Venice. The cast includes Rajkiran, Rajan P. Dev, Ponnambalam, Dhamu, Vaiyapuri, Sathyan, Janakaraj, Pandu, Banupriya, Kuyili, Seetha, Sharmilee and Shakeela. Story is by V. V. Vinayak, camera by P. K. H. Dass, editing by P. S. Soundarraj; and choreography by Rebo, Chinni Prakash, Dinesh, Rajasekar and Brinda. Produced by Thyagarajan, screenplay and direction are by S. Narayanan.
Sri Surya Movies' "Kovil" is an entertainer with Chimpu and Sonia Agarwal in the lead. Director Hari of "Samy" fame says this is a love story with a difference. Raj Kiran, Vadivel, Nasser, Rekha, Charlie, Satyan, Master Dinesh, S. N. Lakshmi, Rajesh and `Paravai' Muniyamma are in the cast. Harrish Jayaraj has scored the music while Priyan has handled the camera. V. T. Vijayan has edited the film. Snegan and Na. Muthukumar have written the lyrics, Super Subbarayan has composed the stunts, and Kalyan and Brinda have choreographed the dances. A. M. Ratnam has produced the film and Hari is in charge of story and screenplay.
An Indian Theatre Production, "Pudhukotailirunthu Saravanan" tells the story of a young man, who goes abroad in search of a job, and in the process, loses his certificates. How he manages to make a living is the story.
"Kovil" claims to be a romantic story with a difference.
For Dhanush, who is acting as the hero, this is his first foreign assignment, wherein he has acted in a fight sequence without the help of a dupe. Aparna, the heroine, is a college student. After a long time, a Tamilian has been introduced in Tamil films as a heroine. Yuvan Shanker Raja and director S. S. Stanley have recorded the songs in London. Peter Hein, from Vietnam, has introduced his countrymen in stunt sequences and also taken care of the stunts. Producers V. Gnanavel and L. M. M. Swaminathan have acted in guest roles. Like in MGR's "Ulagam Sutrum Valiban" shooting has been done at Thailand queen's palace and Singapore and Malaysia. Karunas and Dharika are also in the cast.
