For action buffs
SEVEN UNUSUAL personalities will hit Chennai's theatres soon, with the release of the Sean Connery-Naseeruddin Shah starrer "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen."
The league, led by Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery), is a motley crew of eccentric superheroes, which has to save the world from a masked menace known as the Fantom, who is trying to sabotage a conference of world leaders in Venice, Italy.
Wild car chases in Captain Nemo's (Naseeruddin Shah) six-wheeled wonder car, fancy shooting by marksman Tom Sawyer (Shane West), elaborate sword fights, flying stunts and imaginative action sequences by the rest of the crew blood-thirsty vampiress Mina Harker (Peta Wilson), invisible man Rodney Skinner (Tony Curran), the immortal Dorian Gray (Stuart Townsend), Dr. Jekyll/ Mr. Hyde (Jason Flemming) will keep action film buffs cheering for more.
The league uses Captain Nemo's submarine, Nautilus, to get to Venice, where the Fantom has planned a chain of explosions to sink the city.
That leaves the League 96 hours to save the world. Typical film fare, but with a touch of imagination as characters are drawn from classics and fiction, and perform superb stunts with fantastic gear.
The dubbed Tamil version, "7 Dhalapathigal", apart from providing some serious skirmishes for action lovers, could also double as a bizarre kind of comedy it's quite amusing to hear Sean Connery yell `Roada paathu car ottu!' .
The film is based on the comic books by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill.
Stephen Norrington of "Blade" fame has directed the "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and the screenplay is by James Dale Robinson. The film, in both English and Tamil, is likely to be released across Tamil Nadu in 45 theatres on October 2.
