Kanchipuram hosts drama festival
THE SOUTH Zone Cultural Centre (SZCC) is conducting a seven-day national drama festival at Anna Kalai Arangam in the temple town of Kanchipuram from August 23 to 29.
The Director of SZCC, Thanjavur, K. Paneenthra Reddy, and the Kanchipuram District Collector, R. Venkatesan, said that for the first time a national drama festival had been organised in Tamil Nadu.
The Kanchipuram district administration has made elaborate arrangements for the festival.
The SZCC Director said that seven plays two in Tamil and one each in Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Telugu and Hindi will be staged by eminent drama troupes and entry is free. The plays will start at 6 p.m. every day.
The festival will open with ``Theerpu Naal," a Tamil play directed by Y. G. Mahendra. The itinerary is: ``Ondu Sanika Vriddhanda" (Kannada, directed by Dr. P. V. Rajaram of Bangalore) on Aug.24, ``Kalivesham" (Malayalam, directed by Narayana Panicker of Thiruvananthapuram) on August 25, ``Pullakethu Pala" (Bengali, directed by Kumar Rai of Kolkata) on August 26, ``Veriyattam" (Tamil, directed by Prof. S. Ramanujam of Thanjavur), on August 27, ``Sarandas Chor" (Hindi, directed by Kabib Dhanvir of Bhopal) on August 28 and ``Yagnaseni Aathmakatha" (Telugu, directed by G. S. R. K. Sastry of Hyderabad) on August 29.
Paneenthra Reddy said that the South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur, is an autonomous body under the Union Ministry of Tourism and Development.
