Feast for cineastes
FIVE YEARS ago it was a small initiative by Cinemaya, the Asian film quarterly, to introduce to Indian viewers the kind of cinema rarely seen in this country. But now Cinefan, the festival of Asian cinema in Delhi, has become an annual event of significance.
Cinefan 2003 (July 17-28, New Delhi) has over 70 films from 30 Asian nations including Turkey and Japan. In addition to the usual `Asian Frescoes', `East West Encounters' and `Indian Bazaar', sections include `Digitally Malaysia' and the intriguingly named `Notions of Solitude'. The last mentioned has an art exhibition to go with it at the Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, and a two-day seminar with artistes, writers, filmmakers, actors and critics as participants.
The festival will feature world premieres like "Journey to Tomorrow", and award winning films from international festivals at San Sebastian, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Marrakesh. This year's international jury is headed by the eminent Indian filmmaker Mrinal Sen. The jury will choose the NETPAC award and the awards for Best Film, Actor and Actress.
The screenings are to be held at the India Habitat Centre, Siri Fort, and the French Cultural Centre. Entry is free as in previous years. For more details see www.cinemaya.net.
