Kumbabhishekam at Koothanur

Goddess Saraswati at the Koothanur temple, near Mayiladuthurai.

TEMPLES FOR Saraswathi, Goddess of learning, are rather rare. In fact, only one such temple exists in Tamil Nadufor — the Maha Saraswathi Ambal temple at Koothanur, in Tiruvarur district. Mahakumbabishekam of this temple was performed recently and thousands witnessed the holy event.

N. Ramanatha Sivachar, Head Master of Sankara Math Veda Sivakama Padasala, Gurugnanasambandar Avathara Illam, Sirkali, conducted the Kumbabishekam along with other Sivachars. R. Kamaraj, MP, M. T. Ganesamurthy, Superintendent of Police, and S. Ilango, Joint Commissioner (HR and CE), took part.

Located on the banks of the Arasalar river the temple has Saraswathi as the principal deity. Legend has it that the Goddess gave poetic ability to Ottakoothar, a Tamil poet, Saraswathi devotee who worshipped her. The village Koothanur has been named after him. Legend has it that the three rivers — Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswathi — flow into the Arasalar. Also, the Goddess, in the guise of an old woman, had helped the Tamil poet Kambar escape the punishment ordered by the King. Devotees who throng the temple offer notebooks and pencils in worship, and take them back home. White saris and lotus flowers are also offered to the Goddess. It is believed that the Goddess rectifies speech defects.
