Ushering in the new year

Mammootty and Leena in "Junior Senior"... shot entirely in foreign lands.

LOVERS OF Tamil cinema must be looking forward to films to be released on the auspicious Tamil New Year's Day. Producers have not let them down what with half-a-dozen films hitting the theatres next week.

AVM productions is coming up with ``Gemini,'' its 162nd film. This is one firm among the four in the world still producing films after 50 years in existence. ``Gemini" is a love story with a difference and the treatment by director Saran will certainly delight the viewers. It has some beautiful songs tuned by music director Bharadwaj. Vikram has sung ``O Podu", a song, which has already captured the imagination of his fans.Rani of "Kadhal Kottai" "Vellarikka" fame has danced with Vikram for the song.

The cast consists of Vikram, new find Kiran, `Kalabhavan' Mani, Murali, Charlie, Dhamu, Ramesh Khanna, Vaiyapuri, Madhan Bob, Thyagu, Ilavarasu, Vinuchakravarthi and Thennavan. Camera is handled by Venkatesh, lyrics are written by Vairamuthu, editing is done by Suresh Ars. The film is produced by M. Saravanan, M. Balasubramanian, M. S. Guhan and B. Gurunath.

G.V.Films' ``Tamizhan'' is a typical Vijay film replete with its usual share of action and songs. Vijay sings a song with heroine Priyanka Chopra (Miss World 2000), who is singing for the first time in Tamil. Ashish Vidyarthi does the villain role of GK. Young Iman has composed music and A. Majith makes his debut as director. S. A. Chandrasekar has written the screenplay.

The cast includes Nasser, Delhi Ganesh, Vivek, Jaya. Cinematography is by K. Ahambaram. Editing is done by Lenin-V. T. Vijayan. Art is taken care of by Sabu Cyril. Lyrics are written by Valee and Vairamuthu. Dances are choreographed by Raju Sundaram and Dhinesh. Stunts are composed by Super Subbarayan. Story, dialogue and direction are by Majith. The film is produced by G. Venkateswaran.

This seems to be the season for Thamizh and Thamizhan. Yet another film in this category is Guru films' ``Rajiyam'' which has a song that goes... `Thamizhan Thamizhan, Evanthan Thamizhan', picturised in seven places in Tamil Nadu — Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Tiruchi, Salem, Coimbatore and Chennai.

Vijayakanth as the hero is the centre of attraction in the film. Along with him are Sametha Shetty, Ashish Vidyarthi, Priyanka Trivedi, Dilip, Murali, Vadivelu, Senthil and Janakaraj. Dialogue-V. Prabhakaran, story-Mehanathan, music-Bharathwaj, camera-Karthik Raja, dance-Thara, Sivashanker and Raju, editing- P.Mohanraj, fight-Super Subbarayan. Manoj Kumar has written the screenplay, produced the film and also directed it.

The film is ``Tamizh" which incidentally is the name of the hero, who is always clad in dhoti and shirt. For Prasanth it is a new kind of role. The story is told through action-oriented scenes and Prasanth, for the first time, has done it himself. A highlight is the lengthy dialogue that Prasanth delivers at the Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple. The performance won the admiration of the onlookers on the sets. Simran, Nasser, Ashish Vidyarthi, Ponnambalam, Manorama, Vadivelu, Charlie and Livingston are in the cast. Camera is handled by Priyan, editing is taken care of by Lenin and V. T. Vijayan, music is scored by Bharadhwaj, lyrics are written by Valee, Pa. Vijayan, Thamarai and Arivumathi. Story, screenplay, dialogue and direction are by Hari. ``Junior Senior'' of Sakthi International was picturised entirely in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and an island nearby for some 40 days. A fight sequence was shot at China town in Malaysia, which is teeming with people till 9 p. m. The heroine is Leena, a Malaysian who speaks good Tamil. Her ancestors are from Punjab.

Mammootty, Hamsavardhan, Ramesh Khanna, Charlie, Charulatha and Pandu are lead players in the film. Lyrics are written by Pa.Vijai and V. Ilango and the music is scored by Yuvan Shanker Raja. Camera is handled by Rajesh. Stunts are by Kanal Kannan. Dance sequences have been choreographed by Tharun Kumar. N. Prasanna Kumar has written the dialogue. Story, screenplay and direction are taken care of by J. Suresh. The film is produced by P. Loganathan.

A devotional film with Vijayashanthi in the lead is Mahalakshmi Productions' ``Sri Bannari Amman''. This is Vijayashanthi's 175th film. Shooting was held at various temples including Hyderabad Mahasakthi Amman, Bangalore Sivan temple, Tenkasi Kasi Viswanathar, Kulasekarapattinam Mutharamman, Sindalakkarai Vekkaliamman, Sathiyamangalam Bannari Amman, Koyambedu Kurungaliswarar, Tiruvotriyur Vadivudai Amman, and Sri Kalikaambal temple in George Town. Vijayashanthi observed certain rituals till the completion of the film. A huge Amman statue will be given to the theatres that are releasing the film.

The cast includes new find Laya, Karan, Rajan P. Dev, Bayilwan Ranganathan, C. R. Saraswathi, `Pasi' Sathya, Baby Akshaya, and Nalini. Kushboo and Sukanya have appeared in two dance numbers. Music and lyrics are by T. Rajender, camera is cranked by Vijai, editing is done by V. Jayashanker and art is taken care of by Antoni Peter. Story, screenplay and direction are by S. Bharathi Kannan.
