With high objectives in mind

The beautiful idols are a speciality of the Sarguneswaraswamy Temple...

MANY TEMPLES in the Cauvery delta area built by the Chola kings, were in a dilapidated state. But they came to life after devotees renovated them. Sri Sarguneswaraswamy temple at Karuveli village in Tiruvarur district is one such. The temple, which was in a very bad condition, was renovated and Kumbabhishekam performed in 1997 — thanks to the efforts taken by the residents of the village, particularly Mr. V. Krishnamurthy, former chairman, BHEL, Maruti and SAIL, who hails from the village.

He is also the hereditary trustee of the temple. He, along with his brother Mr. V. Vaidyanathan, chairman, Kalki group of Publications, has infused it with new life.

Every year, on the day kumbabhishekam was performed, the villagers re-dedicate themselves, for the improvement of temple and the village.

Every year on that day, the villagers perform Samvatsrabhishekam to Lord Sarguneswarar and his Consort Sarvanganayagi. This year Sarvatsrabhishekam was held on March 31, at the temple. Mahaganapathi homam, Navagraha Homam and Mahabhishekam were performed to the Lord and the Goddess on that day. Thirukalyanam was also performed in the evening. A vocal recital by S. P. Ramh, followed the Thirukalyanam.

According to Mr. G. Kannan, honorary secretary, Sri Sarguneswaraswamy Temple Management Committee, panchaloka idols used as Urchavamurtis had been stolen from the temple long time ago.

But they were recovered and handed over to the temple. Pujas were performed to those idols also on March 31.The idols were those of Chandrashekar-Ambal, Sivakamasundari, Adipoorambal, Kaliamman and Pradosha Nayakar.

A padal petra sthalam, as Thirunavukarasar, one of the Nayanmars, has sung in praise of the Lord, Karuveli temple was built during the Chola period. The principal diety is Sri Sarguneswaraswamy and the Goddess Sri Sarvanganayaki. Legend has it that a King Sargunan worshipped the Lord and got salvation. The place is also called Sarguneswaram. The temple has a tank in front called Yama Theertham. The temple also has beautiful idols of Arthanareeswarar, Dakshinamurthy, Brahma, Durgai and Bairavar. The temple also has rare inscriptions.

Preserving the architectural greatness of yore... a view of the temple of Lord Sarguneswaraswamy that has been brought to life.

Goddess Sarvanganayaki is an imposing structure. The five and a half feet tall deity is the most beautiful one in the temple.

Legend has it that Goddess Parvathi, returning from the yagam conducted by Dakshan, her father, wanted to impress the Lord. Hence she acquired all the beauty in the world and took the form of Sarvangasundari (all beautiful woman) and appeared before Sri Sarguneswaraswamy. She wished to pacify the Lord Siva as She had gone to the Dakshayagam against His wishes.

Lord Siva had not been invited to the yagam, and the Goddess had to return after being humiliated there.

Mr. Krishnamurthy, hereditary trustee, who attended the Samvastrabhishekam, said that temple should be the centre of all improvements in the village.

The objectives of renovating the temples in the village, including the Anjaneyaswamy temple and the Mariamman temple, were to revitalise, promote and maintain the unique culture and heritage of the Cauvery delta.
