Dedicated to Purandaradasa

IT was not a routine Purandaradasa Day celebration at Hamsadhwani. Although Sowmya rendered such popular kritis as "Sakalagrahabala neene" (Atana), "Nimma Bhagya Doddado Namma Bhagya Doddado" (Begada), "Dayamado Ranga" (Kalyani), with alapana and lively swaras, there was genuine misapprehension whether the liveliness of the concert would be sustained in the seemingly sober Malahari RTP. The fears proved to be misplaced when Sowmya handled it with skill. The pallavi — " Dasa Rangadasa Haridasa Vittaladasa Purandaradasa" were appropriately chosen. Sowmya also sang Vyasaraya's tribute by Sishya Vijayadasa in Dhanyasi, "Kandena Kanasinalli Govindana" (Chandrakauns) "Naneumadideno Krishnayya" (a ragamalika in Ranjani, Mohanam and Kanada) and finally "Bagyada Lakshmi" and a Dasavatar mangalam. On the whole it was a devotion filled concert. For one or two kritis she explained the meanings and significance. M. Narmada (violin) gave decorative touches to the vocalist's alapanas and swara renderings. Neyveli R. Narayanan's mridangam display was an epitome of skill and suaveness. — K.S.
