On the spot choreography

THE DHANANJAYANS are creating a new trend in performances now. The couple, both in their 60s presented one item for the entire evening. They have coined a new word ``Nrityopaharam'' for the choreography of composition varnam. The Nrityopaharam that they presented for Bharath Kalachar this season was extraordinary. Lasting more than an hour the couple presented the varnam in Atana raga composed by Thuraiyur Rajagopala Sharma, eulogising Krishna. Dhananjayan got so involved with his depiction of the little Krishna for the Charanam Chinni Krishna ra ra.. that he came to the edge of the stage. He was about to lose his balance but in a split second had the presence of mind to improvise and jumped past the machinery which was kept below the stage. Looking into the audience for Krishna and not finding him there, Dhananjayan ran back disappointed to continue the dance unfazed thus earning spontaneous applause from the audience who had held their breath when he came to the edge. It was an example of spontaneous on-the-stage choreography and the couple continued to delight the audience.
