Pleasing tone

PRABHAVATI GANESAN, a faithful exponent of the Chittibabu style of veena, and who performed in the morning session of the Music Academy, is a very enthusiastic artiste. The opening Ata tala varnam in Kanada set the tone and tenor of the proceedings, followed by "Mooladharamurti" of Papanasam Sivan in Hamsadhwani embellished with a lively chittaswaram and fluent kalpanaswaras in the pallavi.

The tonal quality in the artiste's playing was pleasing and her raga delineations of Suruti ("Sri Venkatagireesam") and Poorvikalyani ("Gnanamosaga radha") were imaginative. The Ragam Tanam Pallavi was in Shanmughapriya.

The raga interpretation encompassing a sizeable range endued with ear-worthy sancharas, the aesthetic ragamalika tanam and Dhanyasi, Varali, Karnataka Devagandhari, Hamir Kalyani and Bageshri, arrested attention.

A simple pallavi in 2 Kalai Adi Talam was rendered with felicity. Prabhavati is a very seasoned musician. If she could focus more on the sahitya meetu, listening dividends would increase manifold.

Poovalur Srinivasan on the mridangam and Pudukkottai Ramachandran on the ghatam provided sensitive percussion support.

A well-defined lucid alapana of Bilahari by Nagamani Srinath was responded to with refined phrasings on the violin by Ganesh Prasad.

In spite of the sincerity in the oral articulation, the complete beauty of Shyama Sastri's "Mayamma" in Ahiri proved somewhat elusive. Nagamani's Shanmughapriya alapana was imaginative and fluent, but would have registered better with sustained notes at every stage of the expansion. The artiste is equipped with a melodic voice encompassing a wide range, and is a very seasoned singer to allow a cosmetic façade to govern her art.
