Primary education

Sir, — The development of a nation depends upon the amount of importance given to education. But we in India are still struggling for universalisation of primary education and eradication of illiteracy. According to the Supreme Court judgement in 1993, every child has a right for free education till he completes the age of 14. But we allot only 3.5 per cent of the GDP towards educational expense. I wish to suggest that the focus should be on primary and higher education. The State Government should pay special attention to primary education, which is free and compulsory to all. The Central Government should allocate more funds for education in the 10th and 11th Plan also. Only then will India be on par with other developed nations.

A. Bright Rathinam,

Chennai
