Education
No balancing factor
Sir, This has reference to the article, "A shift in objectives" (Education page, Feb-4). Value-based schools were regarded and revered in our society. They were based on the gurukulam model. But now educationin its present form is faster, more commercial and politicised. The unplanned and blind expansion of higher education has ruined the future of many talented youth. There seems to be no balancing factor and the entire system is at fault for this sorry state of affairs. The present day education system is exam-oriented, which needs to be changed. The aim of the teachers today is to enable students pass the annual examinations. Interaction among the students and the teachers lacks perfection. The fear factor of the students creates a distance with the teachers.
The ever increasing, student-teacher ratio is also another factor for the decline in the standard of education. Education, which has become more academic in nature, needs change. Non-academic activities among the students are to be encouraged to tap their talents. Critical thinking and analysis should be fostered. Moral and value based education should get topmost priority in the education sector. The students should be made to learn new things useful to them and society. Education should not just be a passport to a job. It is something more than that. The pattern needs to be changed for a better India.
