A gentle approach
Sir, It is unfortunate to note that teachers still believe in corporal punishment. Children tend to make mistakes. Correction through guidance and counselling only can set things right, not the cane. Psychologists have confirmed that caning only helps to create the feeling of one upmanship in children that, they can also punish those under them when they have power and authority. When children live with criticism, ridicule, shame and hostility, they learn to fight, condemn and feel guilty. The result would be moulding violent, cynical, desensitised future citizens.
Let us teach our children love, the crowning grace of mankind. Let us also teach them forgiveness so that they can be at peace with themselves. Reading, writing and arithmetic are important only if it helps to make our children more humane. Gentle approach and caring words are necessary now. Then we can be sure that they will create for themselves a peaceful world tomorrow.
