Multifaceted personality

PAPU — A biography of Dr. Patil Puttappa: S. M. Krishna Rao; Rashmi Prakasana, A-I Kamath Chambers, 3868, Kakatives, Belgaum. Rs. 120.

IN THIS detailed biography of a multi faceted personality, Dr. Patil Puttappa, the author does not seem to have left out any incident, big or small, friends and relations, who counted for something in Puttappa's life. This would have not been possible but for his very close association and deep study of his works. No wonder he has taken quite a time to produce this comprehensive and stimulating book.

As several political leaders Patil Puttappa also had to go through baptism as champion of student rights. After graduation he was asked by Editor K. Sadananad (who was very impressed by Puttappa's writings on Kannada movement in Bombay Chronicle) to join the paper. If he had accepted Kannada literature would have lost a fiery champion.

It deals extensively with his visit to California University to study journalism and the finer points he learnt in the profession. As the editor of Prapancha weekly his writings made an impact on readers of all hues for the incisive way it was presented. Krishna Rao has referred to the eagerness with which he looked forward to Prapancha as a student. There were problems not only with the administration but also with the editorial policy of the several papers Puttappa was connected.

The fruition of a united Karnataka State was not an easy business. On a few occasions leaders of Mysore State preferred to keep out and retain the status quo. These had to be cajoled and convinced by Patil Puttappa and others. Ironically those leaders of Mysore State who opposed integration began to occupy high seats of power when a united Karnataka was carved.

The several anecdotes the author has given make interesting reading. He has made brief succinct of Puttappa's writings in the weekly on different subjects.

The book contains two colours pictures of Patil Puttappa and his wife Indumati Patil. The cover page picture of Patil Puttappa in contemplative mood is striking.
