Kerala University gets new VC

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM. Aug. 13. The Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the universities in the State, has appointed the head of the Institute of Management in Kerala (IMK), M K. Ramachandran Nair, as the next Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kerala. Dr. Ramachandran Nair was the Government's nominee in the panel of three names submitted to the Governor by a committee constituted for the purpose. The other two names were those of the Head of the Department of Law, N.K. Jayakumar, and the Professor of sociology at the Madurai-Kamaraj University, Thara Bai. Dr. Ramachandran Nair has authored four books, including `Development Administration' and `Social Obligations and Privatisation'. He also has 26 research papers to his credit.

Directive to DPI

The Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, has asked the Director of Public Instruction (DPI) not to implement the order directing schools to collect their electricity and water bills from the pupils. The Chief Minister issued the directive after reports about the Education Department's order appeared in the newspapers.

Photography awards announced

Prakash Karimba of Tirur has won this year's photography award instituted by the State Government. Pradeep Kunnambathu of Thrissur won the second place and Krishakumar Muppathadam of Aluva, the third. The Minister for Information and Parliamentary Affairs, M.M. Hassan, said the awards would be distributed at a function here on `World Photography Day', on August 19. The winners were selected from 156 applicants, who had sent in 297 photographs as entries. The topic of the photography competition was `A moment from life'.

IA to operate additional flights

Indian Airlines will operate six additional flights from the international airport here to Sharjah between August 29 and September 3 to cater to passengers proceeding to the Gulf sector after the Onam holidays. According to a spokesman of IA, all six flights will depart from here to Sharjah at 9-15 a.m. The flights are among the 60 additional flights to be operated by the airline from seven airports in South India to the Gulf sector between August 11 and mid-September.

Award for O.V. Vijayan

KOZHIKODE AUG. 13. The novelist, O.V. Vijayan, has been chosen for the Sanjayan Puraskaram instituted by the Thapasya Art and Literary Forum. The award consisting of Rs. 50,001 in cash, citation and memento will be presented to the noted writer at a function in Kottayam in the second week of September, the Thapasya patron, K. Gopalakrishnan, and the State president, C. Janardhanan, told presspersons here today. The jury consisted of the poet, Akkitham, Prof. K.P.Sankaran and Prof. Thuravoor Vijayan.

Couple electrocuted

PALAKKAD AUG. 13. A couple was electrocuted in the Muthalamada electrical section, near Kollengode, this morning when they came into contact with a live wire that had snapped. The deceased were identified as Guruvayurappan (35) and his wife Sathyabhama (30). The main electric line passing through their compound had snapped and fallen on the road in front of their house last night. Irate residents ransacked the Muthalmada electrical section and manhandled the staff alleging neglect on the part of the KSEB in maintenance works.

Kathakali award

KOCHI AUG. 13. The State Kathakali award will be presented to Kavungal Chathunny Panicker at a function to be held at the Thripunithura Abhishekam Centre at 11 a.m. on August 17. The Governor, R.L. Bhatia, will present the award.

The Civil Supplies Minister, G. Karthikeyan, will preside over the function, said the Thripunithura MLA, K. Babu.

Facilities for bill payment

KOLLAM Aug. 13. The KSEB Deputy Chief Engineer in Kollam, K. Radhakrishnan, has said that for the convenience of consumers in Kollam, arrangements have been made to keep the bill payment counters of the KSEB open on certain days during the Onam holidays. For the consumers at the Kottarakara circle, the bills could be paid at the section office counters on August 14, 27 and 30.

Jubilee souvenir

Members of the Kollam Sree Narayana College Alumni Association who are yet to receive the Silver Jubilee souvenir brought out by the association are requested to contact the alumni association office on the college campus between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. from August 16 to 21 for collecting the same, the association secretary, S. Ajit, said in a statement here today.

Ganesh Utsav

The Kerala Kshetra Samrakshana Samithy will organise this year's Ganesh Utsav of the Kottarakara Mahaganapathy Temple on August 20. A cultural conference to be organised in connection with the celebrations will be inaugurated by the Travancore Devaswom Board president, N. Babu. A painting competition on Lord Ganapathy for school and college students will be held at the temple auditorium on August 15.

KSTU camp

The Kerala School Teachers Union (KSTU) is organising a two-day State-level leadership camp here on August 24 and 25. The camp will discuss the educational policies of the State Government so as to enable them to present the real facts before the people, the reception committee chairman of the camp, A. Yunus Kunju, said in a statement here today. The camp would be addressed by the Education Minister, Nalakath Soopy, the Health Minister, Kadavoor Sivadasan, the Minister for Public Works, M.K. Muneer, and the MLAs, E.T. Mohammed Basheer, Prayar Gopalakrishnan and Shibu Baby John.

I-Day parade

Thrissur Aug. 13. The Cultural Affairs Minister, G. Karthikeyan, will take the salute at the Independence Day parade here. The parade will be held at 8 a.m. at the Students' Corner of the Thekkinkad Maidan. School students will sing patriotic songs at 7-45 a.m., a press release said.

Gujral arrives

KOTTAYAM Aug. 13. The former Prime Minister, I.K. Gujral, arrived here today on a three-day private visit to the lakeside tourist centre of Kumarakom. Mr. Gujral, accompanied by his wife and son, arrived by car at the Taj Garden Retreat at 10-50 a.m. The former Prime Minister will celebrate the Independence Day at the tourist centre.
