Godhra carnage: victim's kin seeks police protection

By Manas Dasgupta

AHMEDABAD NOV. 17. A former civil surgeon, Girishchandra Raval, whose wife was one of the victims in the Godhra train carnage and his 40-year-old son was killed in the subsequent communal riots in Gujarat, has sought police protection.

Dr. Raval has written to the Police Commissioner seeking protection following the VHP international general secretary, Pravin Togadia's recent outbursts against him and some of his neighbours in Ramol locality who had also lost their relatives in the train carnage. Of the 59 killed in the incident, 11 were from this locality alone.

Dr. Raval and his neighbours, however, had since become disenchanted with the VHP and the BJP Government in the State. He was among those who signed a petition to the Supreme Court demanding transfer of all sensitive cases, including the train incident, for trial outside the State. He alleged that the VHP and the BJP were trying to create communal tension by organising "yatras" to take political advantage of the tragedy.

Claiming that the VHP was taking full care of the relatives of the victims of the train carnage, Dr. Togadia had accused the residents of having fallen prey to a "conspiracy" to malign the VHP. He had cautioned them against any step that could bolster the spirit of the "conspirators" against Hindu society.
