Clinton coming on Nov. 21

By Amit Baruah

NEW DELHI NOV. 17. The former President of the United States, Bill Clinton, will visit New Delhi and Agra on November 21-22, well-placed official sources told this correspondent today. The sources said the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, would meet Mr. Clinton — who paid a landmark visit to this country when he was the President in March 2000 — for lunch on November 21.

According to the sources, Mr. Clinton will be in Agra on November 22 and will be using a private aircraft. Mr. Clinton is said to be keen on meeting the Prime Minister and is likely to address a gathering on the issue of HIV/AIDS.

Diplomatic observers credit Mr. Clinton with having effected a change in policy towards India in his second term in office. During his March 2000 visit, Mr. Clinton made it clear that `map making' was not on the agenda in South Asia and emphasised the need to respect the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan.

During the Kargil conflict between Pakistan and India in 1999, he took a keen interest on ending the forcible occupation of Indian territory by Pakistani troops. Mr. Clinton is coming here a little before the Presidential elections in the United States next year.
